The time has come for this lady to take the bun out of her hair, put down the reading glasses and shelve the last book. Okay, maybe that is not quite right. But this spring I turned in my resignation and I am now having my first summer off in 36 years. Yeah, I know those lucky teachers always have summers off, at least that is what the general public thinks. But for most teachers it is time to recharge, take classes, plan new curriculum, organize their rooms, etc. This year I find myself without the normal demands of ordering books, supplies, equipment, iPads, etc. and now must decide what to do with my time.
I knew I could count on my uncle to come to the aid of his niece. He has had numerous years to enjoy retirement and I knew he had a plan all layed out of when to wash towels and bedding, when to vacuum, wash the floors, etc. He also manages to find time for golf. So I contacted him during my first week of retirement and asked if he would share his schedule with me. Guess what? He turned me down. I don't remember his excuse, but here I sat not knowing what to do. So I was left to my own imagination. So I decided to help others with this predicament and share my top things to do when you retire.
- Alphabetize the spice cabinet. See photo 1.
- Wash the landscaping rocks.
- Clean the knobs on the stove. Did you know those little rubber gaskets come off? See photo 2 & 3.
- Clean out the patio door tracks. Ugh - they get really nasty looking.
- Clean the bugs out of the light fixtures.
- Clean the pantry. All other members of the family must now have a ticket to enter. Warning - there will be a pre and post inspection done by the kitchen supervisor.
- Create rotating menu - okay, I honestly haven't done this yet, but it is on my list.
- Clean the glass in the oven door. Still investigating the best way to do this.
- Go shopping for missing spices. Anyone know of a spice that starts with Q?
- If you are really bored then help your daughter with a garage sale. Five years worth of 2 children's clothes. I didn't think it would ever end. NOT recommended.
