Bamboo vs Notability vs Penultimate
by Debbie Disher
I have to admit I have all three of these on my iPad and have not been using them lately. I love to take handwritten notes when I am at a meeting, so notetaking apps always appeal to me.
Bamboo is available for both iOS and Android devices. There is a free version, which is what I am using with a full version available for $1.99 and additional extras you can purchase. This app is pretty easy to use with a few options available. You have a pen and highlighter option with 3 choices of thickness and several colors for each. You can choose to share your document via Email, Photos, Dropbox, Evernote, Print, Facebook, Twitter and Tumblr.
Notability is available for iOS devices for $2.99. Not a bad price for all the extras that you get with this app. It allows you to choose from a wide variety of paper colors and lines vs no lines. You can write, type, audio record, add webclips, stickies and photos. You can also choose between different outlining options. Once you have created documents it is easy to sort them and put them in different notebooks. You can choose to share your document via Email, Dropbox, Google Drive, Twitter, AirDrop, iTunes, Box, WebDAV or print.
Penultimate is a notetaking app for iOS and Android devices from Evernote. The basic app is free with additional options you can purchase. This one is probably the easiest to use because of it's limited options. I have the free version on my device. You are limited to lined paper or graph paper. The pen style offers you a variety of pen colors and three thicknesses of lines. You can share your document via Email, save as an image, or open the page in another app depending on what you have on your device.
These apps are all great for taking notes at a meeting. But if you are looking for something that does more, you might want to checkout NoteSuite ($2.99) that works on both your iPad and your Mac (sorry Windows folks, not available yet). NoteSuite allows writing notes, task management, web clipping and more. These documents are saved on your device which many people like, plus...you can use iCloud to sync documents with your desktop machine.
Awesome Note is another app that is great for keeping yourself organized. I don't have this app but was recommended to me as one that might be worth taking a look at. If you are looking for something to take notes, task management, etc then this might just be the app for you.
In the past Notability has been my favorite notetaking app. The ability to choose my papers, pen choices and the ability to easily organize my notes still make this my top choice. I might just have to buy NoteSuite or Awesome Note and give them a serious try. I must admit though that I don't use my finger for taking notes, I much prefer the JotPro stylus from Adonit.
What have you experienced?
