This week I would like to share my favorite teacher apps that I use on my iPad, but note most of these apps are available for other platforms also. I thought it should be my top 5, but I think I have to go with my top 7. I will put them in alphabetical order, just so I don't have to decide which one is better than another. They are all awesome!
AppoLearning - Here is an awesome app that helps you find the best educational apps for students in grades Preschool - high school. Each age group is then divided into different categories such as: Health, Grammar, History, World Cultures, Geometry, Life Science, Music & Dance, Special Needs, etc. The apps included are chosen by educators. There are also articles written by educators dealing with different technology topics.
Apps Gone Free - This free app comes out daily with a list of 5-10 of the best apps that have gone free. Some days I don't find anything that meets my needs or the needs of my students, but other days I find 1 or 2 that are free for the next 24 hours. This is a great way to get some free apps without wasting a lot of time searching.
Chirp - This free app is a great way for teachers to share information such as photos, links, notes and more with other devices on the same network. This is an iPhone app, but will work on iPads and iTouches also. Imagine working with your 1st graders and all of a sudden you find a great website that you want all your students to go to. Can you imagine the chaos as you try to get students to all type in the web address? With this app everyone opens up Chirp on their device, you then type in the address you want them to go to, all their devices "Chirp" and ask if they want to accept. If they do, the website automatically opens up for them. Imagine all the great uses for this!
Explain Everything - My teachers love this app, especially those who teach math. This app costs $2.99 but is well worth it. It allows you to use it as an interactive whiteboard tool where you can import and export things, annotate, and animate your lesson.
Google Drive - This free app allows you to upload photos, videos, documents and other files which you can then access from any device. I use this one to share files with other staff so that we may collaborate on projects. I also use it for grading projects or for checklists when working with students.
iWork Suite - Okay I have already admitted I love my Apple items - well this is no exception. The iWork Suite includes the Pages, Numbers and Keynote products that those of us who have a Mac computer are probably familiar with. Although these are a little scaled down from the desktop versions, they do a great job. Now Apple has made them free to those who have just bought an iPad.
Socrative - Student Clicker & Teacher Clicker - If you need a student response system, this could be the answer you have been looking for. You can create short answer questions, quizzes, multiple choice questions and more. Students can use a variety of devices to answer from - they just need a web browser.
I hope that whether you are an educator or someone else, you will have found something useful in this week's edition of "THE DISH"
