Do you ever wish you could take someone's cell phone and throw it in a lake? Have you been out to eat for dinner with someone you haven't seen in a long time and they keep checking their phone for new messages? Have you been in an elevator and had to listen to one side of someone's phone conversation? Have you been in the middle of an important discussion with your boss, and then in the middle of the discussion they start checking their email or texting? Have you been in church and been tempted to check your email during the sermon? Just what is proper these days?
I would suggest the following cell phone etiquette tips:
1. If you are going somewhere that you pay for a service - the doctor, dentist, hair salon, etc. then silence your phone and put it somewhere you won't be tempted to check it. These people deserve our respect and our attention while they are performing a service for us.
2. While you are at events, put your cell phone on silent or put it away and enjoy the event. After all...that is what you are there for.
3. When you find yourself sharing a small space with other people, don't use it as a time to use your cell phone. No one wants to listen to your phone conversations.
4. Voice mail is there for a reason, be sure to use it. When you are in the middle of something else, let voice mail do it's job. If the phone call is important, the caller will leave a message.
5. Speak in a normal voice...you don't need to yell.
6. When you are in a meeting, a dinner or any face-to-face situation, give your complete attention to the people in the room. Your phone and it's messages will be there later.
All in all I think we just need to be respectful of other people that we are with while taking these important phone calls or text messages. Your thoughts?
